This innovative new course explores the pivotal events of 1947 and 1967 - following the 1917 Balfour Declaration - as key moments when Zionism unleashed new thinking about the meaning of Jewishness for generations to come. This course engages participants in an open and pluralistic discussion about issues of peoplehood, ethics and theology as they relate to nationhood, land, sovereignty, Jerusalem, occupation and moral red lines. We are honored to welcome Rabbi Phil Graubart to teach this complex curriculum. Rabbi Graubart is the former Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth El. He currently serves as SDJA's first ever Chief Jewish Officer. Rabbi Graubart is an esteemed teacher and leader in San Diego.

Students will be introduced to a variety of mosaic techniques utilizing traditional and upcycled materials including glass, ceramic tiles, vintage and contemporary dishes. You’ll create your own unique tray and leave with instructions for grouting, and confidence to create other mosaics at home.

Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebrates the centennial of America's greatest classical composer and conductor. Drawing from more than 150 photographs, personal items, papers, scores, correspondence, costumes, furniture, and films, this exhibit is the most comprehensive retrospective of Bernstein's life and career ever staged in a museum setting.

Each fall, the Adult Jewish Education department opens its doors to a new class of Melton students who embark on a journey that strengthens their relationship to Judaism and deepens their understanding of how Judaism continues to provide intelligent, relevant and thoughtful answers to issues of life and death, society and our global village, ethics and morality, historical events and future challenges. The two-year non-denominational curriculum, developed by educators at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, is designed to speak to the intellectually curious and contemporary adult Jewish learner. Ancient as well as recent texts on a variety of subjects form the basis of the teachers' presentations and the classes' conversations. There are no prerequisites, tests or homework. The school is open to any member of the community. If you want to incorporate new friendships and Jewish learning into your life, then this is the place for you!
